What is Origin?

The origin of Origin

Origin is a distribution platform supported and developed by Electronic Arts for PC and mobile devices. It has released on June 3 of 2011 and has been made for more than 15 languages. In 2020, the net worth of Origin exceeded 2 billion dollars.

Origin has special features such as profile management, networking for players to chat and directly joining the game, streaming via Twitch, and community integration like Xbox Live, Playstation Network, and Nintendo network. EA has announced in September 2020 that it is planning to retire Origin in favor of a new EA Desktop client for its EA Play service in the future.

History of Origin

EA acquired the trademark Origin when it purchased Origin Systems in 1992. Origin Systems was one of the important game studios in the 1980s and had made many brilliant games in those days.

EA started its career in game supporting by EA downloader in 2005. The life of EA downloader was too short and replaced by EA link which has more features including demos and trailers. In 2007, there was a consensus to replace the EA link with a combination of EA store and EA download manager. The latest update is to provide both client and store under the name of Origin.

The components of Origin

Origin has 3 main components, each will be explained later;

1-Origin store

In the Origin store, users can access games in Electronic Arts’ catalogs and they can purchase them. The purchased software is attached to the user’s account and it is guaranteed they can download it after purchasing anywhere and anytime.

2-Origin client

The Origin client is self-updating software that users can download games, expansion packs, content booster packs, and patches from Electronic Arts. The framework of Origin client resembles its competitor, Steam. Users also can chat with friends and making groups on this platform.

3-EA play

In 2016, EA announced establishing a subscription service for accessing and playing their games on PC, which is called “EA Access”. Via Origin client, it was called “Origin Access”. In this environment, players could choose between paying a monthly or yearly fee to get access to a wide range of games.

Two years later, EA started to establish a premium version for Origin Access, called “Origin Access Premier, that allows playing future EA games early.
