Are you just not into the game you bought on Steam? You may be eligible for a refund!
You’ve come to the right place if you’re wondering how to refund a game on Steam.
Video games can be downloaded from Steam, a company owned by Valve. Steam is also a hub for the gaming community, with over 95 million members active monthly. In addition, Steam works provides tools and services for developers and publishers of video games.
Steam was originally developed for Microsoft Windows, but now it is also available for macOS and Linux users. With Steam’s expansion into mobile gaming over the past ten years, it now offers apps for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.
Steam’s services aren’t flawless, despite its great gaming catalog. A game may not work on your computer due to the hardware requirements, or you may have played it for an hour and decided it wasn’t that good. You might ask for a refund in either case.
There are several digital distribution services out there, but Steam is among the oldest. This video game platform was launched in 2003 by Valve, one of the biggest video game developers in the world.
Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Android, and iOS are all supported by Steam.
Despite what it may seem like, Steam offers over 30,000 video games for sale! 95 million people use it every month.

Is there anything you can do if you don’t like a game you bought on Steam? Is your money refundable?
Sure! Let’s show you how.
How to Refund a Game On Steam:
There are many situations in which you might be able to request a refund from Steam, but the process is not so straightforward. You can request a refund for almost any purchase, according to their customer service. Nevertheless, some items aren’t refundable, and there’s a time limit for when you can get your money back.
Almost any reason can lead to a Steam refund, which is a great thing. However, there are two limitations. When you don’t respect the return period, you aren’t eligible for a refund, which is:
After two weeks from purchase,
Playtime of two hours
In addition to pre-purchased titles and gifts, Steam users can also download downloadable content (DLC), with some limitations explained below. If you purchased within two weeks, you can get a refund if you bought the game before it went on sale.
You will receive your money through the original payment method once the refund is approved. It will be credited to your Steam Wallet in full if it is not possible to do so. In the United States, Steam support refunds can be made using the following payment methods:
Steam offers returns as long as certain conditions are met, like most digital storefronts. The game you purchased may be returned for a refund if it meets those conditions.
If the game you purchased does not meet those conditions, you are likely out of luck, but you can still contact Steam for refund assistance.
The following is what Steam says on its refund policy page:
Almost any purchase on Steam can be refunded for any reason. If your PC doesn’t meet the hardware requirements, if you bought a game by mistake, or if you played it for an hour and just didn’t like it, these are all possible explanations.
There’s no point in worrying about it. If you request a refund via help.steampowered.com within the return period, and if the game has been played in less than two hours, then Valve will issue the refund. Below are more details on refunds, but even if you don’t fit within the rules, you can still request a refund and we’ll look into it.
A full refund of your purchase will be issued within a week of approval. Refunds will be issued in Steam Wallet funds or by the same payment method you used to purchase the item. “Steam will credit the full amount to your Steam Wallet if, for any reason, Steam is not able to issue your refund via the original payment method.”
In-game purchases can be refunded only for 48 hours after purchase as long as the purchase has not been used, modified, or transferred.
The above requirements must be met to get a refund. Here’s what you need to do:
Sign in to your Steam account at help.steampowered.com.
Purchase by clicking “A Purchase.”
Select the item that you want to be refunded and click on it. The game or other item is outside the refund window if it does not appear on this list.
Please select the reason for your refund request.
“I would like a refund.” Click “I would like to request one.”
Fill out the next form and indicate how you want to receive your refund – to your Steam Wallet or your original payment method.
Once this is done, you will receive an e-mail confirmation of your refund request. We will contact you regarding your refund within a few days.
How Long Does a Steam Refund Usually Take?
Steam assures you that your refund request will be approved if you request it 14 days after purchasing the game or within two hours of playing it. A Steam representative will send you an email saying your purchase has been refunded as soon as they confirm your eligibility for one. Within seven days, you should have the money back in your account. It might take a bit longer if you used an international payment method.
It must have taken you less than two hours to complete the game.
Likewise, if you purchased DLC within the last two weeks, and have not played the game for more than two hours since purchasing it, the above applies as well.
This situation is not treated as a refund if the refund request is approved within 24 hours of the purchase. The charge will disappear from your bank statement after Steam cancels the original transaction. The credit won’t appear in your account in this scenario, and the whole process usually takes up to ten days.
Steam Refund Requests Aren’t Always a Smooth Ride
Despite Steam’s generous refund policy, the process isn’t always straightforward. You might encounter some of the following issues when requesting a Steam refund:
Steam’s policies explicitly state that refunds are not guaranteed for older purchases. Steam encourages its users to request a refund even for older purchases. Even though they don’t specify what “significantly” means, refund requests would be denied if the game was purchased significantly outside of the 14-day window
Steam does not guarantee refunds for third-party DLC (for instance, if it levels up a game character irreversibly) or if it is consumed, transferred, or modified by users.
Unless the item has been modified, transferred, or consumed, in-game purchases can be refunded within 48 hours for Valve-developed games. Steam honors refund policies of third-party developers.
Refunds for video content are not possible. Steam is primarily a gaming store, but they also offer movies and series. Your money won’t be refunded if you purchase a video through them and want to return it
No refunds are allowed for items that were not purchased on Steam-If you buy CD keys or Steam wallet cards elsewhere, you will not be able to get a refund from Steam
