Discord NSFW – What Does It Mean?

NSFW stands for “not suitable for younger audiences”. It serves as an alert to minors and sensitive users that adult-themed images and videos can be found below. Additionally, it is used to describe content that contains graphic depictions of violence, blood, gore, strong language, and other content people may find offensive or inappropriate.

Let’s take a closer look at Discord and its relationship with NSFW acronyms.

NSFW and discord content

The relationship between Discord and NSFW content is interesting. Although this type of content is allowed on the platform, it is not permitted everywhere. It is not possible to post adult content on Discord channels that are designated NSFW. Others may receive punishments ranging from a warning to the deletion of their account, depending on the severity of their offense.

For example, if you plan to discuss adult themes and post such pictures and videos on your channel, according to the Guidelines, you must label your account NSFW. When you do this, Discord will ask every user to confirm they’re 18 or older before they can access your channel. Users under 18 will not be able to access your channel.

It is important to remember that when you set your channel to NSFW status, your channel name will look like this: “nsfw-yourchannelname.” Discord designed this solution in an effort to keep adult users interested in sharing and posting NSFW content onboard while also protecting those under the age of 18.

Discord’s NSFW Definition

Discord’s acronym NSFW represents the same thing NSFW stands for across the internet – adult and sexually suggestive and explicit content. The difference is that Discord’s acronym is split into different words. “Not Safe for Work” is the standard definition, but Discord defines it as “Not Suitable for Wumpus.”

Discord’s servers are home to a creature called the Wumpus, an acute, anthropomorphic creature that hates adult images and videos. As a result, Discord created NSFW labels for channels to protect him since they can’t stop him from roaming the servers. Once he sees the “Not Suitable for Wumpus” label on your channel, he will immediately leave.

You can set your channel to NSFW by following these steps

If you want to set your channel to “Not Suitable for Wumpus,” you will need to go to the channel settings. You can do this as follows:

  1. Visit the Discord homepage in your favorite browser, or download the Discord app for iOS or Android and open it.
  2. Now is the time to log in if you haven’t already.
  3. Click on the chat group you want to join.
  4. Click or tap the cog icon on the channel you wish to keep away from Wumpus, depending on the device and platform you are using.
  5. The next step is to navigate to the Overview tab.

  6. You can turn off the NSFW Channel by clicking or tapping the slider at the bottom of the page.

Whenever someone accesses your channel after that, they’ll be warned that they’re entering NSFW territory.

Conduct rules

Even channels with the infamous tag are prohibited from posting certain kinds of adult content, according to the Guidelines. In addition, users can’t break other rules of conduct on Discord servers with the NSFW tag.

Next, we’ll examine minor offenses that could result in a warning or content removal, as well as offenses that are punishable by content deletion or account deletion.

Minor Offenses

Adult content must not be posted on channels that are not labeled as “Not Suitable for Wumpus”. If the content is posted, it will be removed and a warning will be issued. Please note, however, that Discord may delete your account should you continue to post inappropriate images, GIFs, and videos.

Pictures and videos that depict animal cruelty or gore should also be avoided. The Discord server does not want to host torture and sadistic content.

Digitally altered pornographic images or videos starring minors are not allowed on Discord. Additionally, shotacon, lolicon, and cub themes should not be used. Accounts of repeat offenders may be suspended. You might lose your account right away, depending on how severe the offense is. All accounts may be affected.

Posts that promote suicide or self-harm should not be made. A post promoting bulimia, anorexia, or any other disorder will also be removed.

Harassment is not permitted on Discord servers. It is also not permitted to raid users. Posting things that could be interpreted as harassment, or encouraging it, should be avoided. People are encouraged to report bullies on Discord.

NSFW channels, like their “Suitable for Wumpus” counterparts, are prohibited from repeatedly sending unwanted messages or friend requests to other users. Impersonating or disguising others is also prohibited so that you can be added to someone’s friend list.

Spam is also prohibited in Discord’s support system. The risk of being punished for false reporting exists because Discord investigates every report.

Discussion boards strongly discourage posts that violate the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). You can find more about this in Discord’s Terms of Service. You should also refrain from posting anything that violates other users’ rights, IP, or other personal or contractual rights.

Major Offenses

On a Discord server, it is forbidden to post content and do things that are prohibited by law. As a result, your account will be deleted and your content will be deleted promptly. Additionally, you will be removed for encouraging others to do such things.

By compromising or threatening someone’s safety, their account will be deleted. Posts deemed as degrading or attempting to shame people will also be deleted. The poster’s account will also be deleted if they post personal information, such as their email address, social security number, etc.

Content depicting minors in sexually suggestive or violent situations is not permitted. Please refrain from linking to or posting content containing minors in other shameful and inappropriate circumstances.

Content that is corrupted with viruses and other types of malware is a capital offense on Discord, as is hacking, cracking, and posting pirated content. You can also lose your account if you encourage others to post any of these.

The culprit’s own account will be deleted for all attempts to steal other users’ accounts.

NSFW servers are those that are classified as such.

If the server’s content is primarily 18+ or if the community is based around NSFW themes, the server must be classified as NSFW.

Discord will flag servers meeting these criteria as NSFW if they have not been appropriately designated. Upon being impacted, we will send out a system message to server owners notifying them of the issue.

In the near future, server owners will be able to designate their servers as NSFW.

Why Does This Mean Something to NSFW Server Members?

In NSFW servers, users under the age of 13 will not be allowed to view or join.

All iOS users who want to join or access new NSFW servers will have to opt-in to viewing NSFW content on the desktop before they are allowed to enter these spaces.

In addition, NSFW servers that provide explicit pornographic content will be completely blocked on iOS. These dedicated pornography servers will only be available via Discord’s desktop and web versions for iOS users 18 years old and above.

How About New Channels?

The owners of Discord servers must still apply NSFW gates to channels with mature content.

A server that has NSFW channels does not, however, automatically mean that the entire server should be NSFW. Only NSFW designations are needed if the majority of the server’s content is aimed at adults.

Appeal from a NSFW Server Designation

Community owners who wish to remove Discord’s NSFW designation will have to submit an appeal.

Owners of Trust & Safety servers can write into the support queue here:

  • Choose “Appeal the NSFW designation of my server”
  • Enter the required server information

The server owner should provide the server’s ID and an explanation of why their community is safe-for-work (SFW). We cannot accept server-level appeals from anyone other than the owner of the server. Users between the ages of 13 and 17 will be allowed to rejoin communities deemed as SFW after having the NSFW designation removed.

Update Age Information for Users

The age-verification process will not allow users who identify themselves as being between the ages of 13 and 17 to join NSFW servers. You can contact Trust & Safety to update the age information of users who mistakenly identified themselves as 13-17.

This form should be used to submit requests: https://dis.gd/request

  • “Appeals, age updates, other questions” will appear.
  • You can update your age information by selecting the “Update my age” subcategory
  • Submit your date of birth and the requested materials

In order to update a user’s age, Trust & Safety must have all the requested pieces of information. Here is more information about updating age information.

It is important to note that users need to have a verified email address in order to contact our support teams regarding appeals at both the account and server levels.

Discord loosens NSFW lock on iOS devices

After announcing that iOS users would no longer be able to access NSFW servers, Discord caused quite a stir. The company has now partially reversed this action.

NSFW content, or not safe for work, usually refers to nudity, but can also refer to any conceivable media that you wouldn’t want others to see accidentally. Last week, Discord announced that NSFW servers would be categorically banned if users attempted to access them from an iPhone or iPad. It was due to Apple guidelines, which Discord had to follow.

Meanwhile, Discord is partially backpedaling because it has announced that only servers that offer explicit pornographic content will be blocked on iOS. 13-17-year-olds are still prohibited from using the site. Discord users older than 18 years old have the opportunity to connect to an 18+ server.

A loophole in iOS makes it possible

“Using iOS, users 18 and older must first sign up to view NSFW content on a desktop before they are allowed to access NSFW servers,” writes Discord in a blog post. The iOS platform still prohibits users from viewing pornographic content; users must go to the desktop or web version to view pornographic content.

Discord’s new solution exploits a loophole in the Apple guidelines: If NSFW content is hidden by default in iOS apps, it is allowed. Activating via a website is required by Apple in this case, and it is also required by Discord.

To view NSFW servers from iOS devices, iOS users are required to “opt-in on desktop.”

Here is how you can sign up for iOS:

1. Navigate to your User Settings in Discord on the desktop. The User Settings can be accessed by clicking the gear icon in the bottom left corner of the app.

2. Click on Privacy & Safety under User Settings.

3. On iOS, click the toggle for “Allow access to NSFW content”. With this app, you will be able to view NSFW servers you are already a member of from your iOS device.

In addition, iOS will block all NSFW servers that contain explicit pornographic content.

Only desktop and web versions of Discord will be able to connect to these dedicated pornography servers for iOS users.

NSFW is not for everyone

It’s not a crime to be NSFW on Discord and it will not hurt you or your channel. You may, however, get in serious trouble if you violate the Terms of Service and the Community Guidelines. If you violate these terms, you may lose your channel.
