PS5 won’t turn on - Wepicker

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is quite popular among video game enthusiasts since it succeeds the PlayStation 4. However, some of them have reported issues with the PlayStation 5 not turning on. In this article, we offer some solutions to the problem. You can try it if you are bothered by the same problem.

PlayStation 5 (PS5) is a home video console designed and developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is the successor to PlayStation 4. It was released on November 12, 2020. There are a large number of PS4 and PS5 games users can play on this console.

The PS5 is quite popular among game lovers, as expected. Approximately 10.1 million consoles will be shipped by June 30, 2021, according to Sony. In several countries, the PS5 was even the best-selling console for the first two weeks.

Unfortunately, some users encounter the “PS5 won’t turn on” issue. Sometimes when people press the power button, the PS5 immediately turns off. A beep may also be heard or white light may flash briefly. A Reddit user gave the following example:

I can’t turn on my PlayStation 5! Can you help me? I was playing Valhalla. I went to the bathroom and when I came back the console was off. I thought it was in rest mode but no orange lights were on the sides. I tried to turn it on. I heard a beep but nothing happens after. What’s going on?? This never happened to me.

Even though you might encounter the same problem, please do not get upset if you do. We have provided some solutions below.

Method 1: Ensure the power supply is working

In case your PS5 doesn’t start, try rebooting the console. You should check your power supply if your PS5 does not stay on all the time.

Check whether the power cord is damaged by disconnecting the AC (alternating current). In the case of a damaged item, you will need to contact the vendor for a replacement. In any case, wait a few minutes and then reconnect the power cord correctly. Afterward, power on your console again to see if the problem has been resolved.

Try disconnecting the power cable from the PS5 and plugging it into a different socket to see if that resolves the issue. Turn the PS5 on afterward to see if that works. Attempting another solution should be your next step if it doesn’t turn on again.

Method 2: Ensure the HDMI cable is properly connected

In addition to checking your AC power cord, you should also inspect your HDMI connection if your PS5 doesn’t start. If the HDMI cable is not connected correctly, you can reconnect it.

An HDMI cable should be connected to the HDMI input of your TV, and one end of the HDMI cable should be connected to the HDMI port on your PS5 console. You can then try turning on your PS5 console by connecting it to the AC power outlet. If you cannot turn on your PS5, try using a different HDMI cable.

Method 3: Restart the PS5 console

When your PS5 won’t turn on but beeps or flashes white lights, you can power cycle the console. Follow these steps to do so.

Step 1: Press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power light stops flashing.

Step 2: Disconnect the power cable and wait for at least 20 minutes so that all the power can be drained.

Step 3: Reconnect the console’s power cable and turn the console back on.

If this method doesn’t work, please move on to the next solution.

Method 4: Place the disc in the drive

There are two versions of the PS5, the Standard Edition, and the Digital Edition. In the former, there is a Blu-ray-compatible optical disc drive, while in the latter, there is none. You can try inserting a PS5 disc into your PS5 console if you are using the Standard Edition as opposed to the Digital Edition, and your console will detect the disc and automatically turn it on.

Step 1: Prepare the disc and gently wipe it with a clean cloth to remove any dirt or prints.

This disc can be any disc, including a DVD, Blu-Ray, or another game. It is important to note that PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs.

Step 2: Place your PlayStation 5 console vertically on its stand, then slowly insert the disc into the console. Note that when you try to insert the disc, you should insert it so that the right side of the disc is facing you.

As long as your PS5 console turns on, you can disconnect the disc and it should work properly. If you are using a PS5 Digital Edition, then all you have to do is follow the next method.

Method 5: Enter Safe Mode and restart the PlayStation 5

If you have a PS5 that won’t turn on, but beeps or flashes when you turn it on, you can restart it in Safe Mode.

Step 1: Make sure the console has been powered down by pressing the power button on the front panel.

Step 2: Press and hold the power button. Wait for the second beep and then release the power button.

Step 3: Connect the controller to the PS button and press it. You’ll then be able to enter PS5 Safe Mode.

Step 4: You will see the following options in Safe Mode, and you should choose the first one to restart your PS5:

  1. Restart PS5
  2. Change Video Output
  3. Update System Software
  4. Restore Default Settings
  5. Rebuild Database
  6. Reset PS5
  7. Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)

Please keep trying the following method if this doesn’t work.

Method 6: Cleaning the Inside of Your PS5 Console

As a result, dust can clog your PS5 console’s fan, preventing it from cooling properly, causing overheating and other hardware failures gradually. Therefore, it’s a good idea to clean the inside of your PS5 console, especially if you’ve been playing it for a long time.

A compressed air duster will help you to clean the console. You will need soft clothes and strong isopropyl alcohol. Please choose a cloth that won’t leave a sticky residue when you use it. The nozzle of a compressed air duster is usually thin and long, which makes it easy to clean corners where hands cannot reach. You can find one on Amazon.

Step 1: Disconnect all cables from your PS5 console and put them on a flat surface.

Step 2: Wait for a while. Then blow out any dust and debris you find in the ports and in the exhaust fan using a compressed air duster.

Step 3: To clean the console, gently wipe it with a cloth that has been sprayed with some alcohol. Once the console is dry, wipe it again.

Be sure to wash your hands after cleaning your PS5, as isopropyl alcohol can irritate your skin.

It is not necessary to remove the white case of the PS5 console to complete a simple cleaning. Using a compressed air duster, you can clean the internal parts of the case easily if necessary. It is important to be careful when cleaning them so that the small parts will not be damaged.

Once your PS5 console has been cleaned, make sure that it is completely dry, and then turn it on.

Method 7: Update the operating system

If you can enter Safe Mode, you can download the latest version of the system software on a USB storage device such as a USB flash drive and install it in Safe Mode to resolve the PS5 not turning on issue.

It is important to note that the USB flash drive needs to be formatted as FAT32 before being able to update the PS5 system software. Formatting your USB flash drive can be accomplished with File Explorer, Disk Management, or Command Prompt on a Windows computer. MiniTool Partition Wizard may be helpful as well. Now, let’s see how to format it to FAT32 with MiniTool Partition Wizard.

Warning: Don’t turn the PS5 console off while the update is being installed. Your console may be damaged as a result.

Step 1: Connect the USB flash drive to a Windows computer. Afterward, download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard.

Step 2: Right-click the partition on your USB flash drive in MiniTool Partition Wizard and select Format.

Tip: When formatting the USB flash drive, the entire contents of the drive will be wiped out. So, please make sure there are no important files or back up the files beforehand.

Step 3: Choose FAT32 as your file system from the pop-up menu. Continue by clicking OK.

Step 4: Click the Apply button in the bottom left corner of the main interface to begin formatting.

Step 5: Click on the File Explorer icon by pressing Win + E. Next, access your USB flash drive and create a new folder called PS5. Create a new folder called UPDATE within the PS5 folder.

Step 6: Download the official PS5 update file to the UPDATE folder and then follow these steps:

Go to the official PlayStation 5 system software update website using your favorite web browser.

Find the Download an update file for a PS5 console section.

Select the Save link as an option when right-clicking the PS update file under the section. Click Save after opening the UPDATE folder in the pop-up window. Once you wait patiently, a file named PS5UPDATE.PUP will appear.

Step 7: Connect your PS5 console to the USB flash drive and eject it. You will then need to boot your PS5 in Safe Mode and select the third option Update System Software.

Step 8: Select Update from USB Storage Device > OK in the next window.

Tip: If the PS5 console cannot recognize the update file, please check whether the USB file system is FAT32 and whether the folder and file names are correct.

Afterward, you just need to wait until it is complete and check whether PS5 not turning on the white light has been resolved.

Method 8: Reset the PlayStation 5

If your PS5 console won’t turn on even after updating the system software manually, you might need to consider resetting it.

Note that all data on your console will be deleted during the resetting process. As a result, make sure you have tried all the methods mentioned above, and only use this one when it is necessary to troubleshoot the issue.

Tip: If you are using PlayStation Plus cloud storage for your console and have enabled the Sync saved data feature, your saved data will be synced automatically and you can download it back after a reset. Alternatively, you can use an external hard drive to back up your PS5 data before the operation if you are able to access Settings on your console.

Step 1: Switch to Safe Mode on your PS5.

Step 2: Choose Reset PS5 when you get the Safe Mode options. The process will be completed once it is complete.

You may need to reinstall the PS5 system software in Safe Mode if the issue “PS5 not turning on” persists.

Step 1: Create a folder named PS5 and a folder named UPDATE inside the PS5 folder on a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32. You must then download the latest PS5 system update file from the official PlayStation website as you did in Method 7.

Step 2: Plug in your USB flash drive to your PS5 console and boot the console into Safe Mode.

Step 3: Choose option 7 Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).

Step 4: Click on Update from USB Storage Device > OK.

You can try turning the console on after you reinstall the PS5 system software.

The PS5 may have issues with certain components inside the console if none of the methods above resolve the problem. If you need further assistance, you should contact PlayStation Support. During the warranty period, you can contact the vendor to get the PS5 repaired or replaced.
